3 Things You Should Do When Transitioning to a New Job

by Makenzee R. Taylor, on June 28, 2023
Starting a new position can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. You may have expectations on how the first couple of days will turn out, and while all of that is great, you may experience some challenges as you get your feet under you and settle into your new company.

While this task might seem daunting, you’re not alone! This post covers three things to definitely do when transitioning to a new job. We hope these tips encourage you, whether you’re on the job hunt now or have just concluded one and are stepping into a new role!

Give the Position a Chance

Taking a chance at a new job is a great thing…even when it doesn’t always feel like it! If you start a new role and immediately feel like you’re floundering, don’t be afraid to ask for help. It’s expected that you need more support as you get up to speed, especially as you begin orientation and training.

The important thing is to give this new position a chance. Some people start a new position, work a couple of days, then get frustrated and start to feel like there are better fits. That might be true, but we recommend staying and giving the job more of a chance. This will also matter when future employers view your resume. They will notice your employment history – including the length of time you held each position – and adding employment that lasted less than a month to that resume will not show your commitment to the company.

Get to Know Your Coworkers

Having allies in your workplace is a great perk of any new role. Make it a priority to meet and speak with someone who has been working with the company for a while and knows the ins and outs of your role and its expectations. Whether you’re feeling uncertain during training or nervous about owning certain tasks, sitting down for a quick conversation with a coworker is a great way to address those concerns

Consider asking questions like these:

  • How long have you been working here?
  • Are there opportunities to move up?
  • What were some of your struggles when starting your position?
  • Who will offer me help when asked?

If you feel alone and have no one to talk to about your experiences or doubts, ask a coworker if they can relate – or if they know someone who can. Transitioning into a new position is much better when you have a coworker to connect with.

Check In With Leadership

As you get oriented and move through training, it's essential to check in with your leader/supervisor to ask how you're doing. This helps you make sure you’re on the right track and shows your supervisor that you’re an active participant in your training and onboarding.

Questions to ask your leader/supervisor:

  • Am I meeting the needs of the company?
  • Are there any areas I should focus more on or get retrained?
  • With these new skills I've been learning, are there any areas I can work on to excel and move up in the company?

A healthy relationship with your leader is an effective way to advance your career. Your leader should see that youre eager to seek advice and learn more, especially if you are transitioning to a new role. Additionally, talking to your leader helps discover new opportunities within the organization, and is a great way to get feedback on your work to ensure you meet the company's expectations.
