In many work environments, it's important to dress for success. Your appearance represents you as an individual, and by extension, your employer.

If you’re not sure how to navigate dressing for success in your work environment, we’ve pulled together some tips and tricks for you to make a good impression.

Know the Company Culture

Every business is unique and has requirements and expectations for its employees. Typically, when you are hired, the employer will explain the dress code so you can prepare to be ready for your first day.

If you are getting ready for an interview and not sure about their expectations, then we recommend business casual or business professional to make a good impression. Not sure what this entails? Here are some examples of the most common dress codes used in companies today:

  • Business formal - Dark colors, formal suits, button-up shirts, solid-colored ties, and dress shoes are typical of this dress code.
  • Business professional - Dress pants, professional skirts, sports jackets, patterned ties, and nice shirts can be worn according to the dress code.
  • Business casual - Adding more character to your clothing is now possible, including shirts with colors and patterns and different colored skirts, khakis, polos, vests, and sweaters.
  • Casual - A wide variety of dress options, including t-shirts, jeans, skirts, sweaters, and sandals are possible with this informal code.

There are challenges that people face when trying to dress for success. Perhaps you don't already own many professional clothes, or you don't know what is appropriate for work. Below are a few tips to help you get started:

  • Consider buying clothes that can be worn in a variety of ways.
  • Make sure your clothing is appropriate for work.
  • Tattoos and piercings can distract people from what you have to offer, so make sure to tell your employee what you have and see if they prefer you cover them up.
  • It’s nice to be courteous to your peers in the workplace if they are allergic or irritated by your perfume or cologne. If so, small amounts may be necessary.
  • Opt for a natural, professional makeup look.

These tips are a starting guide to help you if you are unsure where to begin. Though we have shared some standard expectations for work dress, you can also still be yourself. Every company is unique and there are ways for you to match the culture while retaining your individuality.
